Effects of Dust on Gravitational Lensing by Spiral Galaxies

چکیده
Gravitational lensing of an optical QSO by a spiral galaxy is often counteracted by dust obscuration, since the line-of-sight to the QSO passes close to the center of the galactic disk. The dust in the lens is likely to be correlated with neutral hydrogen, which in turn should leave a Lyα absorption signature on the QSO spectrum. We use the estimated dust-to-gas ratio of the Milky–Way galaxy as a mean and allow a spread in its values to calculate the effects of dust on lensing by low redshift spiral galaxies. Using a no–evolution model for spirals at z ∼< 0.8 we find, in Λ = 0 cosmologies, that the magnification bias due to lensing is stronger than dust obscuration for QSO samples with a magnitude limit B ∼< 16. The density parameter of neutral hydrogen, ΩHI, is overestimated in such samples and is underestimated for fainter QSOs. Effects of Disks on Gravitational Lensing by Spiral Galaxies
Gravitational lensing of a quasar by a spiral galaxy should often be accompanied by damped Lyα absorption and dust extinction due to the intervening gaseous disk. In nearly edge-on configurations, the surface mass density of the gas and stars in the disk could by itself split the quasar image and contribute significantly to the overall lensing cross section. We calculate the lensing probability...
متن کاملMass and Dust in the Disk of a Spiral Lens Galaxy
Gravitational lensing is a potentially important probe of spiral galaxy structure, but only a few cases of lensing by spiral galaxies are known. We present Hubble Space Telescope and Magellan observations of the two-image quasar PMN J2004–1349, revealing that the lens galaxy is a spiral galaxy. One of the quasar images passes through a spiral arm of the galaxy and suffers 3 magnitudes of V -ban...

We study gravitational lensing by spiral galaxies, using realistic models consisting of halo, disk, and bulge components combined to produce a flat rotation curve. Proper dynamical normalization of the models is critical because a disk requires less mass than a spherical halo to produce the same rotation curve—a face-on Mestel disk has a lensing cross section only 41% as large as a singular iso...

We investigate the effect of gravitational lensing on the farthest known supernova, SN1997ff. The SN was found at z ∼ 1.7 in the Hubble Deep Field North and is most likely of Type Ia. Due to our poor knowledge of the properties of the lensing foreground galaxies, we conclude that large magnification effects are possible for reasonable lens parameter values implying that this single SN does not ...

Studies of weak gravitational lensing by large-scale structures require the measurement of the distortions introduced to the shapes of distant galaxies at the few percent level by anisotropic light deflection along the line of sight. In order to detect this signal on 1’–10’ scales in a particular field, accurate measurements of correlations between the shapes of order 10–10 galaxies are require...
